Is Luxon standing in the way of political equality for all?

  • Democracy Action By Democracy Action
  • Nov 16, 2023

The individuals vociferously opposing ACT leader David Seymour's commitment to a referendum on co-governance may not fully grasp that their objections are, in essence, directed against the principles of political equality and universal suffrage for all New Zealanders. It remains uncertain whether these outspoken critics recognise the broader implications of their resistance to our fundamental human rights.

Specifically, they oppose passing a law that would send a clear message that three principles MUST prevail over any contradictory enactment by Parliament, or finding by the Courts:

  • All citizens of New Zealand have the same political rights and duties.
  • All political authority comes from the people by democratic means including universal suffrage, regular and free elections with a secret ballot.
  • New Zealand is a multi-ethnic liberal democracy where discrimination based on ethnicity is illegal.

Rumour has it that agreement on this election promise by the Act Party is holding up the formation of our next government, and that Luxon does not agree with holding a referendum on these three simple principles.

We need to send him a very clear message that we voted for a change of government to:

  1. preserve our democracy;
  2. ensure equal citizenship is the foundation of our country;
  3. respect the rights of everyone regardless of ethnicity or national origin.

PLEASE ACT NOW!

Send Christopher Luxon a message at: [email protected]

Sample text for email:

Well done on a successful election.

I understand that coalition negotiations are in the final stages.I hope constitutional issues are on your radar in the talks. I am writing to urge you to support the proposal to hold a referendum on fundamental constitutional principles, such as:
  • All citizens of New Zealand have the same political rights and duties.
  • All political authority comes from the people by democratic means including universal suffrage, regular and free elections with a secret ballot.
  • New Zealand is a multi-ethnic liberal democracy where discrimination based on ethnicity is illegal.
For the avoidance of doubt, these principles must prevail over any contradictory enactment by Parliament, or findings by the Courts.

Thank you for considering this very important issue – so vital for the future well-being of our country.

And send a message to David Seymour to support the ACT Party's stance on the referendum: [email protected]

You could send a message to Winston Peters to ask NZ First to support the referendum proposal too: [email protected]
