Village officials in Bridgeview, Illinois formally designated a stretch of South Harlem Avenue as “Little Palestine” this week, marking the area’s large Islamic population and concentration of Arab-owned businesses.

The announcement came during a ceremony held as part of Arab American Heritage Month.

Local Islamic leaders and business owners are highlighting the corridor’s long-standing Muslim identity.

New Designation Formalizes Existing Community

The newly designated area runs from 79th Street to 113th Street along Harlem Avenue, according to officials.

It received approvals at both the state and county levels.

Business owners said the designation reflects what locals recognize as an Islamic zone.

At Milk Cake Bakery, co-owner Waseem Al-Wawi described the neighborhood as a hub for Arab families.

“We’re basically a dessert café focused on high-quality sweets and drinks inspired by, like, Middle Eastern flavors,” Al-Wawi said.

He added that the concentration of businesses creates a sense of familiarity for the community.

“As a Palestinian walking here in the Little Palestine area, seeing all these businesses, all these Palestinian businesses, you can find anything you want,” he said.

Business Owners Welcome Recognition

Across the street, M’dakhan restaurant owner Muhammad Baste said the designation carries both symbolic and practical significance.

“It means a lot for me, it means a lot for the community,” Baste said.

A lifelong Bridgeview resident, Baste said operating a business in the area comes with a responsibility to positively represent the culture.

“It’s an honor and a responsibility at the same time,” he said.

“You’re trying to let people know that your culture has good fine dining.”

Baste also expressed hope that the designation would help shift perceptions.

“My hope for the future is to bring more awareness that, not to judge just off of one person or one group,” he said.

Broader Plans for Development

Village officials said the “Little Palestine” designation is intended to go beyond signage.

There are plans to promote cultural events and support business growth along the corridor.

Concerns Raised Online

Not everyone is celebrating the news, however.

Social media users are raising concerns about the implications of such designations in American communities.

“This is the Islamic Takeover of America,” the popular X account Wall Street Apes warned.

“We are giving our country away to Muslims just like the UK.”

“This only ends in living under Sharia Law.”
