Top Bishop Sounds Alarm, Warns of ‘Mortal Threat to Civilization’

A leading Catholic voice is raising the alarm about a “mortal threat” facing humanity, warning that Western civilization is at risk of total “collapse.”

Bishop Robert Barron warns that America’s accelerating abandonment of faith is not just a cultural shift but a direct threat to the survival of Western civilization itself.

Barron, speaking on “The Will Cain Show,” sounded the alarm over what he described as a dangerous drift away from God that is having far-reaching consequences for society.

‘A Mortal Threat’ to Western Civilization

“What is the biggest threat to Western civilization?” host Will Cain asked.

“The loss of God,” Barron responded.

“If we keep marginalizing God, Western civilization will collapse.”

Barron made clear this is not a minor cultural trend or an internal issue for churches.

“You say, ‘Oh, that’s a little sociological problem for the churches.’ No, no, no,” he said.

“That’s a fatal threat.

“It’s a mortal threat to Western civilization.”

Collapse of Religious Identity Accelerating

Barron pointed to a dramatic shift in religious affiliation over recent decades as evidence of a deeper crisis.

“When I was a kid back in the ’70s, 97 percent of Americans identified with a religion,” he said.

“Three percent said they had no religion.

“Now it’s like 28 percent would claim they have no religion.”

The rise of the so-called “nones,” those who claim no religious affiliation, has been widely documented, alongside declining church attendance across the country.

But Barron warned the implications go far beyond empty pews.

Losing the Moral Foundations of Society

According to Barron, abandoning faith risks severing the very foundation that underpins Western values and institutions.

“The more we lose touch with our biblical roots, the more we lose touch with the Hebrew prophets, and with Jesus, the more we lose touch with the religious tradition, we’re going to lose the moorings of our Western culture,” he said.

For Barron and others raising similar concerns, faith is not simply a personal matter; it is the bedrock that holds society together.
